Four artists have canceled their Hopscotch appearances for various reasons: Death Grips (who canceled all 2012 tour dates), Duchess Says, Strand of Oaks, and High Wolf will not be performing at the festival in September

Three major additions join the more than 170 bands still playing Hopscotch: Atlanta rapper KILLER MIKE—a Grammy-winning hard hitter as comfortable with political raps as he is party jams—has recently confirmed his slot at this year’s festival

After several years of solo projects, side-projects and collaborations, Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink returned to work as AZURE RAY in 2009. In spite of an excellent 2010 full-length, Drawing Down the Moon, tours have been infrequent, but Hopscotch will welcome the Saddle Creek Records veterans for an intimate and rare date during September

Great young Durham duo BAOBAB also joins Hopscotch 2012. Creating hypnotic folk music buoyed by intricate beats and textures, Baobab uses its songs as a springboard for a multimedia stage show, not as an endpoint.

The Independent Weekly proudly announces its third annual Hopscotch, North Carolina’s largest and most diverse music festival that has, once again, gotten just a touch grander. Scheduled for Sept. 6–8, 2012, in downtown Raleigh, with 175 bands in 15 venues, Hopscotch has grown to offer fans more local, national and international choices in just about every genre imaginable—from classic indie rock and emerging hip-hop to experimental heavy metal and gospel-blues orchestras. This year, three new venues—the majestic Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh’s beautiful Contemporary Art Museum and the historic Long View Center—add another exciting dimension to the festival and its lineup.

Hopscotch will be highlighted by two nights in Raleigh City Plaza, the city’s most captivating downtown space. On Friday, Sept. 7, two rock legends, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Built to Spill, will be joined by dynamic opener Zammuto. And on Saturday, Sept. 8, possibly the best live crew not only in hip-hop but all of music, The Roots, headline with New York disco force Escort and local soul project Shirlette and the Dynamite Brothers supporting. Roughly 165 other bands perform in 14 clubs during the festival’s three days. A sampling of these acts includes: Yo La Tengo, Liars, Sunn O))), Danny Brown, Thee Oh Sees, Baroness, Death Grips, Deerhoof, Damien Jurado, Flosstradamus, Zola Jesus, Laurel Halo, Pallbearer, Young Magic, Lambchop, Cities Aviv, Oneida, Wye Oak, Samantha Crain, Glenn Jones, The Spits and Colin Stetson.
